Frequently Asked Questions
A fixture that mounts on top of a pole rather than on an arm off the side. Post tops are the standard form for decorative and pedestrian scale lighting along walkways, plazas and streetscapes.
Usually yes. HID to LED conversion kits and replacement post tops let you keep the pole and often the housing. Check the fitter size and the mounting arrangement first.
Yes. Replacement globes are stocked in several diameters and in both acorn and prismatic profiles. The fitter size, which is the opening that clamps to the fixture, is what has to match.
It depends entirely on the fixture. A traditional open globe emits upward and generally is not. Cutoff versions that keep the decorative form but control the optic can be. Check the specification against your local ordinance.
Scale and intent. Decorative post tops are pedestrian scale, mounted lower, and chosen partly for appearance. Parking lot fixtures mount high on plain poles and are chosen purely for coverage and uniformity.
Pedestrian scale schemes are typically much lower than parking lot poles, because the goal is lighting a walkway and creating a sense of place rather than covering a large open area. The right height depends on spacing and the light level you need.
