Wall mounted lighting does the work that pole lighting cannot reach: the building face, the entry, the loading door, the walkway right against the wall, and the covered areas underneath. Browse the range below, or read on for help choosing.

What Does a Wall Pack Actually Do?

A wall pack mounts on the building and lights the ground immediately around it. That covers entries, service doors, walkways, alleys and the perimeter strip that pole lighting in the middle of a lot leaves dark.
Because it sits at eye level or a little above, glare control matters more than it does on a 25 foot pole. Full cutoff and shielded designs push light down where it is useful instead of out toward the property line.

Full Cutoff or Semi Cutoff?

Full cutoff wall packs emit nothing above horizontal. They control glare and light trespass, and they are what dark sky ordinances generally require.
Semi cutoff and traditional prismatic wall packs throw more light outward and upward, which lights a wider area but also puts light where it is not wanted. Where an ordinance applies, or where neighbors are close, full cutoff is the safer specification.

Where Does Canopy Lighting Belong?

Canopy fixtures light the underside of a covered structure: fuel islands, drive throughs, covered walkways, parking decks and loading bays. They mount flush or recessed into the canopy deck so the fixture sits out of the way.
The design problem is uniformity across the covered area combined with enough light at the edge that the transition to the open air does not read as a dark wall.

What About Decorative Wall Mounts and Sconces?

Decorative wall mount fixtures and sconces do the same job with an architectural face. They suit entries, facades, courtyards and any elevation where the fixture itself is part of the design rather than something to hide.
Output is usually lower than a utility wall pack, so they tend to be used for appearance and wayfinding rather than for security level illumination.

How Do You Control Wall Mounted Lighting?

Photocells are the most common control, switching each fixture at dusk and off at dawn without any central system. Some wall packs have the photocell integrated.
Motion sensing suits service doors and alleys where full output is only needed when someone is present, and it cuts runtime considerably. Dimming and scheduling add another layer where a site wants reduced levels after hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

A full cutoff fixture emits no light above the horizontal plane. All output goes downward, which controls glare and stops light spilling onto adjacent property or into the sky. Many municipalities require full cutoff on exterior fixtures.

High enough to spread light over the area you need and to keep the source out of direct sightlines, but not so high that the pattern washes out. Mounting height, fixture spacing and the beam pattern work together, and a layout will confirm the spacing.

Many do, and photocell ready versions accept one. A photocell switches the fixture on at dusk and off at dawn with no timer or central control needed.

A wall pack mounts vertically on a building face and lights outward and down. A canopy fixture mounts on the underside of a covered structure and lights straight down into the space beneath it.

Yes. Motion sensing suits service entries, alleys and loading areas where full output is only needed when someone is there. It reduces runtime significantly while keeping the area covered.

Usually not on their own. Decorative fixtures are chosen for appearance and wayfinding and generally produce less output than a utility wall pack. Where security level illumination is the goal, pair them with wall packs or specify accordingly.
