Directional lights are the adjustable spotlights of landscape lighting. Mounted on a stake or a base, they tilt and turn so the beam lands exactly where you want it, lifting a tree canopy, grazing a stone wall, lighting a column or picking out a house number. They create most of the drama in a well lit yard.

Uplighting Techniques
Uplighting a tree from its base shows off the trunk and canopy. Grazing places the fixture close to a textured wall and aims it straight up so every stone casts a shadow. Washing sets the fixture further back with a wider beam to light a smooth facade evenly. Silhouetting places the light behind a plant to outline it against a wall.
Beam and Output
Narrow beams reach high into tall trees and columns. Wide floods cover broad walls and hedges. For a mature tree, two or three fixtures from different angles usually look better than one bright light. Shielded fixtures and glare guards keep the source out of sight lines.
Choose weatherproof brass or aluminum bodies, check whether the fixture is 12 volt or 120 volt, and plan the wiring so each fixture sees steady voltage from the transformer.
