Undercounter lighting is the single most useful upgrade in most kitchens. Overhead fixtures sit behind you while you work, so your own shadow falls on the counter. A slim light mounted under the upper cabinets puts clean, even light right on the work surface, and it doubles as a soft night light for the room. The same fixtures work in bars, bookshelves, display cabinets and closets.

Puck, Linear or Tape
Puck lights are small round fixtures that create pools of light, which suits display cabinets and shelves. Linear bars spread light evenly along a run of counter and are the usual choice for kitchens. LED tape is the thinnest option and bends around corners or hides inside a lip.
Match the fixture length to the cabinet, and leave a small gap at each end so the light reaches the corners without a dark band.
Good task lighting on a countertop usually calls for about 200 to 400 lumens per linear foot. Many fixtures are dimmable or include a built in switch, and some add a motion sensor so the light comes on as you reach the counter.
Placement and Wiring
Mount linear fixtures toward the front edge of the cabinet, not against the wall. That lights the whole depth of the counter and keeps the glare off glossy backsplashes. Plug in fixtures are simple to add later, while hardwired fixtures give a cleaner finish and can be switched with the room.
A 3000K color temperature keeps food and stone surfaces looking natural.
Choose a CRI of 90 or higher so food looks natural, and match the color temperature to your ceiling lights so the kitchen reads as one space.
