How Many Poles Does a Tennis Court Need?

Most single courts are lit from the sides, with poles set back from the sidelines so nobody plays into a pole shadow. The count depends on the level of play and the mounting height available. Taller poles cover more surface per fixture and cut glare because the source sits further above the sightline, so a taller layout often uses fewer poles than a shorter one.
Court orientation matters too. Side lighting keeps the brightest part of every beam out of the service sightline at both ends. We model your exact pad dimensions in a free photometric layout so pole count, height and aiming are settled on paper before any concrete is poured.

What Makes Tennis Lighting Different From Area Lighting?

An area light only has to put light on the ground. A tennis fixture has to light the air the ball travels through, which is why uniformity and vertical illuminance matter more than raw output. A court that is bright at the net and dim at the baselines plays badly no matter what the average reads.
Our packages pair sports optics with crossarms and poles matched to the fixture weight and wind load, so the system arrives as one coordinated kit rather than parts you have to reconcile.

Can You Relight an Existing Court?

Often, yes. If the original poles are sound and positioned correctly, swapping older HID fixtures for LED keeps the infrastructure and transforms the light. The pole has to carry the new fixture’s effective projected area under local wind loading, so pole condition and rating get checked first.
If the old layout was wrong, new fixtures on bad positions will not fix it. Send us photos and dimensions and we will tell you honestly whether a retrofit or a new layout serves the court better.
