Stairs are where people trip in the dark. Step lights solve that by recessing into the riser, the side wall or a retaining wall and casting light across the tread, so each step is clearly visible without a bright fixture at eye level. They add safety and a finished, built in look to decks, patios and garden stairs.

Placement on Stairs
Mount step lights in the riser or the side wall, low enough that the light falls across the tread. On a short flight, a light on every other step is often enough. Longer or steeper stairs are safer with a light on every step.
Glare Control
Louvered and eyelid style faceplates direct light down onto the step and keep the source hidden from anyone walking up or down. Choose a fixture rated for wet locations on exposed stairs, and match the faceplate finish to the wall or deck material.
Choose weatherproof housings, and wire step lights to a photocell, timer or motion sensor so the stairs light automatically at dusk.
