The MR16 is the small, bright workhorse of accent lighting. At 2 inches across, it fits track heads, small recessed accent fixtures, display cases and most low voltage landscape spotlights. LED MR16 lamps deliver the punch of the halogen lamps they replace while running far cooler, which matters in tight fixtures and near finished surfaces.

Transformer Compatibility Comes First
Most MR16 lamps run on 12 volts through a GU5.3 two pin base, so they depend on a transformer. Older magnetic and electronic transformers were designed around the higher load of halogen lamps, and some will not drive a low wattage LED lamp smoothly.
If a new LED lamp flickers or will not light, the transformer is the usual cause. Check the lamp’s compatibility notes, or pair it with an LED rated transformer.
Where MR16 Lamps Work Best
Use a narrow beam to highlight artwork, a stone feature or a tree trunk. Use a wider flood beam in track lighting over a kitchen island or in a landscape fixture washing a low wall. Warm 2700K or 3000K lamps suit most homes.
A typical LED MR16 draws 4 to 7 watts in place of a 20 to 50 watt halogen and puts out roughly 300 to 550 lumens. Look for a CRI of 90 or higher for art and display lighting, confirm the lamp is dimmable if it sits on a dimmer, and match the beam angle to the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most MR16 lamps use a GU5.3 two pin base and run on 12 volts. Some 120 volt versions use a GU10 twist and lock base instead, so check your fixture before ordering.
Flicker usually means the transformer is not compatible with the lower LED load. An LED rated transformer or a lamp listed as compatible with your transformer normally solves it.
Yes, inside a fixture rated for outdoor use. Many low voltage landscape spotlights are built around MR16 lamps.
