Overhead fixtures do the heavy lifting in most rooms. They provide the ambient layer that fills the space, and the right choice depends mostly on what is above the ceiling. This section is organized by installation type, so you can start from the ceiling you have: open joists in new construction, an existing can that needs an upgrade, or a finished ceiling with little room above it.

Surface mount fixtures attach to a standard junction box and need no space above the ceiling. Recessed housings sit inside the ceiling cavity and suit new construction or remodels with access. Canless wafer lights are only about an inch deep, so they fit between joists and under ductwork. Retrofit kits drop into cans you already have and convert them to LED in minutes.

Whichever type you choose, compare lumens rather than watts, confirm the fixture is dimmable if it will be on a dimmer, and plan the wiring before installation, especially in remodels where the junction box location is fixed.

Spacing Recessed Lights

A simple starting rule is to divide the ceiling height by two to get the spacing between recessed lights. An 8 foot ceiling works out to about 4 feet apart, and keep the first row about half that distance from the walls.

Where the ceiling touches insulation, use fixtures rated IC for insulation contact, and choose air tight models to reduce drafts into the attic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recessed lights use a housing, or can, that sits in the ceiling. Canless lights are thin wafers with a small remote driver box, so they need very little space above the ceiling.

A common rule of thumb is ceiling height divided by two. For an 8 foot ceiling, that is about 4 feet between fixtures.

IC rated fixtures are safe to be in direct contact with ceiling insulation. Use them anywhere insulation will touch the fixture.
