Table lamps are the finishing layer of residential lighting. Overhead fixtures light the room, but a lamp beside a sofa or a bed brings light down to eye level, where it feels warm and personal. The right lamp makes a reading chair usable, gives a bedroom a gentle evening glow, and fills the dark corners that ceiling fixtures miss.

Sizing a Table Lamp
When you are seated, the bottom edge of the shade should sit close to eye level so the bulb does not shine into your eyes. As a guide, the height of the table plus the lamp usually works out to somewhere around 58 to 64 inches.
The shade should be a little narrower than the table so the lamp is not easily knocked, and in proportion with the base.
For a bedside lamp, the shade should sit roughly level with your shoulder when you sit up in bed. For a desk lamp, an adjustable arm and a shade that directs light down keep glare off the screen.
Choosing the Bulb
Most table lamps take a standard A19 bulb with an E26 medium base. A warm 2700K LED bulb gives the familiar incandescent glow, and a three way or dimmable bulb lets one lamp serve for reading and relaxing. Browse our LED bulbs for replacements.
Check the switch type before you buy. A rotary or three way switch changes brightness at the lamp, while a lamp plugged into a switched outlet can be controlled from the wall.
