Floods and spots are the same idea at two beam widths: put light on a target from a distance. Floods wash broad surfaces, building facades, tree canopies, hedgerows. Spots reach out and pick a single feature out of the night. This range covers both, in low voltage and line voltage, from small garden heads to commercial flood packages.

Washing a Facade Versus Picking a Feature

A facade wants even coverage with no scallops or hot spots, which means wide beams, generous setback and overlapping throws. A flagpole or a mature oak wants the opposite: a tight beam from close in so the light stays on the target and off everything behind it.
The most common mistake in DIY landscape lighting is buying one beam width for both jobs. Walk the site at night with a flashlight and the difference explains itself.

Uplighting Trees Without Wasting Light

Tree uplighting is aimed by canopy shape. Tall narrow trees take narrow beams at the trunk. Broad canopies take wider floods set back from the drip line. Mature trees often take two or three modest fixtures rather than one powerful one, so the canopy reads dimensional instead of flat.
Fixtures with glare shields keep the source invisible from the street, which is the difference between a lit tree and a light pointed at a tree.

Commercial Flood Applications

Beyond the garden, floods carry building washes, monument and flag lighting, and general area coverage where pole mounting is impractical. Line voltage commercial floods with photocell control run dusk to dawn without a transformer in the system.
For flag lighting specifically, aim from two or three positions so the flag stays lit as it moves, and keep beams tight enough to spare the neighbors.
