Diagnosing a Socket Problem

The signs: a lamp that works when wiggled, blackened or green contacts, lamps that fail early in one fixture while identical lamps live elsewhere. The socket’s spring tension and contact surfaces are gone, and the arcing that results kills lamps.

Sockets are identified by base size and rating. A photo of the old socket and its markings is enough to match.

Outdoor Fixtures Age at the Socket First

Landscape and exterior fixtures live in moisture, and the socket cavity is where condensation settles. Corroded sockets are the most common failure in otherwise sound outdoor fixtures, especially in bi-pin landscape hardware.
