Sconces and pendants are where lighting becomes part of the decor. A pair of sconces frames a mirror or a doorway, while a row of pendants over an island sets the style of the whole kitchen. Beyond looks, both put light at a human height, which softens shadows on faces and makes a room feel more welcoming than overhead light alone.

Mounting Heights That Work
In a hallway or living room, sconces are usually mounted with the center of the fixture roughly 60 to 66 inches above the floor. Beside a bathroom mirror, place one on each side at about eye level so the face is lit evenly without shadows.
Over a kitchen island, hang pendants so the bottom sits roughly 30 to 36 inches above the counter, and space them 24 to 30 inches apart. Over a dining table, aim for about the same height above the tabletop.
Choose dimmable wall lights for bathrooms and bedrooms so the same fixture works at full brightness in the morning and low at night. For vanity lighting, a CRI of 90 or higher at 3000K gives the most accurate view in the mirror.
Indoor, Porch and Patio
Outdoor sconces and porch pendants need a fixture rated for the location. Covered porches call for damp rated fixtures. Walls exposed to rain need wet rated fixtures. For larger exterior walls, see our decorative wall mount range.
Shade and finish change the light as much as the fixture does. Glass shades spread soft, even illumination, while metal shades in brass, bronze or black direct light up and down the wall.
