Surface mount fixtures are the simplest way to light a room from above. They fasten to a standard ceiling junction box, sit close to the ceiling and need no space in the cavity above, which makes them ideal for finished ceilings, low ceilings and rooms where running new housings is not practical. LED versions are slim, bright and last for years between service calls.

Where Surface Mount Fixtures Shine
Bedrooms, hallways, closets, laundry rooms and garages are all natural fits. Low profile LED fixtures clear doors and shelving, and wraparound styles spread light evenly across a work area such as a workbench or a utility sink.
Installation is usually a direct swap at the existing junction box: with the circuit off, the old fixture’s wiring is disconnected and the new mounting plate goes up in its place. Look for a dimmable LED fixture rated for 25,000 hours or more so it rarely needs attention.
Sizing a Ceiling Fixture
A quick sizing guide is to add the length and width of the room in feet and use that number as the fixture diameter in inches. A 12 by 12 foot bedroom, for example, suits a fixture around 24 inches across. For larger rooms, use two fixtures rather than one oversized one.
