Recessed Lighting

Housings and trims that sit flush in the ceiling for clean, even light.

Recessed lights keep the ceiling clean and put the light where it is needed without a fixture hanging in view. They are the default ambient light in modern kitchens, family rooms and hallways, and with the right trim they can also work as task or accent lights. A recessed light is two parts: the housing that sits inside the ceiling and the trim or LED module that finishes it.

New Construction or Remodel

New construction housings attach to joists before the drywall goes up. Remodel housings are made to install through a hole cut in an existing ceiling, holding themselves in place with clips. Choose the housing type based on whether the ceiling is open or finished.

Plan the wiring runs before installation. Each housing carries its own junction box, and fixtures are usually connected in a chain on one circuit to a single switch or dimmer.

Size, Rating and Trim

Four inch fixtures give a tighter, more modern look and work well for accent lighting. Five and six inch fixtures spread more light and suit general room lighting. Use IC rated housings anywhere insulation will touch the fixture, and air tight models to limit drafts.

Baffle trims reduce glare, reflector trims push out more light, and adjustable gimbal trims let you aim light at a wall or a fireplace.

Compare lumens, not watts, and choose a dimmable LED trim or module with a CRI of 90 or higher for kitchens and living areas.
