LED Retrofit Downlights
Convert existing recessed cans to LED without opening the ceiling.

If your home already has recessed cans, a retrofit downlight is the quickest way to bring them up to date. The LED module screws into the existing lamp socket and tucks up into the can, held in place by springs or clips, replacing both the old bulb and the old trim in one step. There is no drywall work, and the finished result looks like a new fixture.

Measuring for a Retrofit
Measure the inside diameter of the existing can, not the trim. Four, five and six inch cans are the common sizes, and each needs a matching retrofit module. Note whether the can uses torsion springs or friction clips, since retrofit kits are made to work with one or the other or both.
Check the housing type against the compatibility list for the retrofit kit, since not every kit is approved for every can.
What You Gain
LED retrofits use a fraction of the power of the incandescent or halogen lamps they replace, run cooler, and last for years. Sealed modules also reduce air movement through the can. Choose a dimmable model if the lights are on a dimmer, and match the color temperature to the room.
Most retrofit downlights put out 600 to 1,000 lumens and connect with a medium base adapter or a direct wire connector, and many carry an ENERGY STAR listing.
