Landscape lighting extends a home into the evening. It makes walkways and steps safer, lets the garden be enjoyed after dark, and shows the house at its best from the street. This section groups residential landscape fixtures by the job they do, from lighting a path to lifting a flag, so you can plan the yard one zone at a time and build a system that works together.

Low Voltage or Line Voltage
Most residential landscape lighting runs on 12 volt low voltage power from a transformer. Low voltage cable can be buried shallow, fixtures are easy to move as plants grow, and the system is safer to work on. Line voltage fixtures run on 120 volts and suit very long runs or high output lights, but they need conduit and more involved wiring.
Choose weatherproof fixtures in brass, copper or powder coated aluminum, and energy efficient LED lamps that use a fraction of the power of halogen. Solar fixtures are easy to place, but wired low voltage fixtures give steadier illumination because they do not depend on a full day of sun.
Plan the Yard in Zones
Start with safety: paths, steps and entries. Then add depth by uplighting trees and washing walls with directional lights or in-ground well lights. Finish with living spaces, such as the grill, the patio and the putting green.
Once the fixture count is known, total the wattage and size the transformer with some headroom. Our wire calculator sizes the cable for each run.
Add a photocell or timer so the system switches on at dusk and off at dawn or at a set hour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most residential systems run on 12 volt low voltage power supplied by a transformer, which plugs into or wires to a 120 volt source.
Add the wattage of every fixture on the system and choose a transformer rated comfortably above that total, often by 20 percent or more.
Yes. Most landscape transformers accept a timer or photocell so the lights switch on at dusk and off at a set time.
