Area lights spread light in a wide circle rather than a beam. With a hat or hood above the lamp, they cast light downward and outward, washing a planting bed, a patch of ground cover or the edge of a lawn without shining into anyone’s eyes. They are the quiet background layer of a landscape design, filling the spaces between accent lights so the garden reads as a whole.

Placement and Spacing
Set area lights toward the back or middle of a bed so the light falls across the plants toward the viewer. Space them so their circles of light just overlap, typically 8 to 12 feet apart depending on fixture height and output. A taller stem throws a larger circle.
Use weatherproof fixtures with a warm 2700K or 3000K color temperature, and put a photocell on the transformer so beds light from dusk to dawn automatically.
Area Lights Versus Path Lights
The two look similar, but path lights are designed to light a walking surface in a tighter pattern, while area lights are built for a broader spread over planting. Many yards use both. See our path lights for walkways.
