Where Wells Beat Bullets

Bullets on stakes are flexible but visible, and they lose in lawn areas where mowers pass and in formal hardscape where a fixture body would clutter the line. A flush well disappears into turf, gravel or paving and survives being driven over in many rated designs.
The trade is aimability: wells throw mostly straight up or on a limited tilt, so they suit targets directly above, walls, columns, trunks, dense canopies.

Sealing and Drainage Decide Longevity

A fixture set into the ground lives in water part of the year, so the housing seal, the lens gasket and the drainage under the fixture decide its life. Wells set in a gravel sump drain instead of soaking, and quality gaskets keep irrigation water out of the lamp compartment.
This is a category where build quality is everything, because replacing a failed well means digging, not unscrewing.

Grazing Walls and Silhouetting Structure

Set close to a textured wall, a well grazes light up the surface and pulls the texture out in relief, the signature look on stone and brick. Set back, it washes the surface flat and even. Under a canopy at the trunk, it turns the whole tree into a lit object.
