Lighting the Edge, Not the Eyes

A step light’s geometry matters more than its output. Mounted in the riser or wall, the beam grazes across the tread and defines the edge with a clean shadow line. Hooded and louvered faces keep the source below eye line on the descent, where glare is most dangerous.
One fixture per step is not always necessary. Wider stairs light well from alternating sides, and shallow runs sometimes need only the top and bottom steps marked.

Recessed or Surface Mount

Recessed step lights disappear into the wall or riser and are the choice when the stair is being built or refaced, since they need a housing pocket and wire path inside the structure. Surface mount fixtures retrofit onto finished stairs and masonry where opening the structure is not an option.
Both arrive in finishes from architectural bronze to brass and copper, so the hardware matches the rest of the landscape system.
