Every low voltage system depends on its home runs, and 12 gauge is the workhorse size for carrying power from the transformer out to groups of fixtures. The CLS LLC12500 is 12/2 direct burial cable on a 500 foot roll, enough to wire several runs on a mid-size property without splicing reels together.
When is 12 gauge the right size, and when should I go heavier?
Twelve gauge handles moderate loads over moderate distances. As a run gets longer or the wattage on it climbs, the voltage reaching the last fixture falls. The fixes are a heavier conductor, a higher transformer tap, or splitting the load into two runs. Total the fixture wattage on each run and measure the distance before you commit to a gauge.
What is the cable made of?
Two solid copper conductors sit inside flame-retardant PVC insulation. The cable is made for direct burial, so it can be laid along beds, borders and walkways as part of a standard low voltage layout.
How far will one 500 foot roll go?
That depends on the layout. A hub or loop layout uses more cable than a simple daisy chain but keeps voltage more even from fixture to fixture. Sketch each run on the site plan, measure it from the transformer, and add slack at every fixture so lights can be moved as the plantings grow.
