A mid-sized residential or small commercial landscape lighting system needs a transformer with enough capacity for today’s fixtures and room to add a few more. The CLS TF300SC is a 300 watt toroidal core transformer with 12, 13, 14 and 15 volt taps, housed in a brushed 304 stainless steel enclosure with a single common terminal.
How much fixture load can I put on 300 watts?
Total the VA of every lamp or integrated fixture and keep roughly twenty percent headroom, which puts the working load near 240 watts. That leaves space for later additions without tripping the breaker.
Why use the 13, 14 or 15 volt taps?
Longer runs lose voltage. Moving a run to a higher tap brings the far fixtures back up to their rated voltage without oversizing the cable. Check each run’s length and load with the wire calculator before picking a tap.
What protection and controls are built in?
The primary side has thermal protection and the secondary side has a magnetic circuit breaker. There is an internal timer socket and a photocell port for dusk to dawn operation, and CLS lists it as compatible with WiFi smart plugs for app scheduling. The input is 120 volts AC, and the side-opening case leaves room to wire.
