A 277 volt commercial panel will not run a 120 volt doorbell, an access control head end, a small controller or a service receptacle. A step down transformer gives you a 120 volt supply off the 277 volt service without pulling a new circuit from a different panel.
Which capacity do I need?
Size it to the connected load, not to the device count. A doorbell or chime transformer draws very little and the 50 watt unit covers it. Access control heads, small controllers and signalling gear add up faster, which is where the 100 watt unit lands. The 250 watt unit is for a shared 120 volt supply feeding several devices off one step down point. Pick the capacity on this page and the Sebco part number follows.
Can it be used to step up as well?
Yes. The unit is bi directional, so the same transformer can take 120 volts in and give 277 volts out where that is what the job needs. Confirm the direction and the load with the drawing set before ordering, because the capacity rating applies either way.
Where does it mount?
These are indoor and outdoor rated units intended to mount near the equipment they feed rather than in the panel. Keep the connection points accessible for service.
