Square steel tapered light poles put the steel where the bending load actually is, at the base, which is how a tapered pole carries a bigger fixture package at the same height than a straight pole of similar weight. This group runs 20 to 39 feet with base shafts from 5.25 to just over 7 inches in 11 gauge and 7 gauge wall. They are the usual choice for taller parking lot and area lighting layouts where wind load starts to drive the specification.

Height is what spreads the light, so a taller tapered pole can cover more of a large lot and may cut the number of poles you need, especially with Type III or Type IV fixtures that throw light forward instead of pooling it at the base. The tradeoff is more wind load at the top. On LED Spot’s EPA chart a Lifestyle Medium fixture goes from 1.8 on a single arm to 4.0 in a triple 90 or triple 120 layout.

That is why the fixture EPA, not the pole profile, should drive the gauge choice. Our explainer on the importance of EPA wind ratings shows how wind-exposed area and drag combine into the rating your pole has to meet.

How to choose a pole: pick the fixture and bracket, look up the fixture EPA, then match pole height to the wind load at your site.

The four things to weigh when choosing a pole: height and light distribution, material, EPA wind rating and LED compatibility.
