Short and medium runs to a handful of low wattage LED fixtures do not always need a heavy conductor, and 16 gauge cable is easier to pull and lay in a trench. The CLS LLC16250 is a 250 foot roll of 16/2 landscape cable with solid copper conductors, rated for direct burial without conduit.
When is 16 gauge cable the right size?
Gauge comes down to two numbers: the total wattage on the run and the distance from the transformer to the last fixture. Low wattage LED path and accent lights on a moderate run often fit 16 gauge comfortably. Longer runs or heavier loads call for a heavier conductor. Check voltage drop before you trench, not after.
Can it go straight into the ground?
Yes. CLS rates it for direct burial without conduit. The jacket is sunlight resistant PVC, and the insulation over the solid copper conductors is flame retardant PVC.
Is a 250 foot roll the right length for my job?
It covers several medium runs on one property, or one long run with cable left for later additions and repairs.
