Where lighting ideas turn into real lighting solutions

360W LED Type IV Area Lights

Forward-throw Type IV area lights that push 360W of light out from a building face or the edge of a large lot.

A Type IV optic sends almost all of its light forward in a semicircle and very little behind the fixture. That makes it the choice for the edges of large paved areas, the back row of a lot that borders a fence or neighbor, and fixtures mounted along the side of a building looking out over parking. LED Spot carries the 360W Type IV in 3000K, 4000K and 5000K, in bronze or white, with 120-277V input. Before ordering, walk the property line and note which poles face a home or road; those are the spots where Type IV earns its place. Pair them with Type III area lights in the interior for even coverage.

When should you choose a Type IV area light over Type III?

Type IV is a placement decision more than a brightness decision. Use these checks.

  • Property edges. If a pole sits on the lot line and there is nothing behind it you want lit, Type IV keeps light on your pavement instead of the neighbor’s yard.
  • Building mounts. A fixture on a wall or the side of a building only needs to light forward, which is exactly what this pattern does.
  • 3000K near homes. When the back of the lot faces a residential street, a warm 3000K head paired with forward throw cuts down on complaints. Warm light has less blue content, which scatters less and reads as less glaring.
  • Keep the head level. Full cutoff means no light above the horizon. Tilting a forward throw head up to reach farther sends light toward neighbors’ windows and the sky, which is what dark sky lighting rules are written to stop.
  • Mixing patterns. Large lots often use Type IV on the perimeter and Type III or Type V toward the middle. Keep the same color temperature on all of them.

Add a motion sensor if the back rows sit empty after hours, and ask for a photometric layout before setting final pole locations.

360W Type IV Questions

Type IV projects light forward in a wide semicircle with minimal light behind the fixture. It is built for edges, where the area to light is entirely in front of the pole or wall. That is different from Type III, which spreads more to the sides from a perimeter pole.

The product description notes it is suited for mounting on building sides and walls as well as poles. Confirm the mounting hardware and the wall structure with your contractor. Tell us the mounting surface when you request a quote so we send the right configuration.

LED Spot stocks the 360W Type IV in 3000K, 4000K and 5000K. Warm 3000K is a good fit on the side of a lot that faces homes. Cooler options work well where the priority is visibility.

Start with Type IV on the poles nearest the property line, since it puts little light behind the fixture. Choose 3000K for those heads and avoid over-wattage on short poles. A photometric layout will show the light levels at the lot line before anything is installed.

It can. Ordinances are set by states, cities and even neighborhoods, and many communities across the country have them. Most look at shielding, color temperature and after-hours operation, so the 3000K version plus a timer or sensor is the usual starting point. Our article on avoiding light pollution with LED lighting covers the main tools.

Usually, once the mount matches. The old shoebox carried a ballast and a large reflector, so a 360W LED head generally adds less weight and wind area than what came off. Confirm the fixture EPA against the pole rating for your wind zone; our page on LED lighting and wind ratings explains why this matters in hurricane regions.
