Where lighting ideas turn into real lighting solutions

Light Pole Caps

Black round and square caps that close off the open top of a 4, 5 or 6 inch steel light pole.

A pole cap closes the open top of a light pole shaft when the fixtures mount to the side on arms or brackets instead of on a top tenon. Leave that end open and rain runs down inside the pole, collects at the base plate and starts corrosion where nobody looks until the welds are already weak. An open top also invites birds and wasps to nest in the shaft. LED Spot stocks black pole caps for round and square commercial light poles in 4, 5 and 6 inch sizes. These caps are made to fit Techlight poles, so confirm the pole brand and the outside dimension at the top of the shaft before you order.

How Do You Pick the Right Pole Cap?

Three things decide the fit: shape, size and pole brand.

  • Shape. Round caps fit round poles and square caps fit square poles. There is no adapter between the two.
  • Size. Measure the outside width of the shaft at the very top: flat side to flat side on a square pole, outside diameter on a round one. Order the 4, 5 or 6 inch cap that matches.
  • Brand. These caps are built for Techlight poles. Wall thickness and top dimensions vary between pole makers, so a cap that fits one brand can sit loose on another.

A tapered pole is narrower at the top than at the base, so a round tapered steel pole sold as 5 inch at the base will take a smaller cap at the top. Check the top dimension on the pole specification, or call with the pole model and we will confirm the fit before you order.

Pole Cap Questions

No. A tenon adaptor seats over the top of the pole and carries the fixture, so the top is already closed. Caps are for poles where the fixtures mount to the side on arms or brackets, and for poles standing before their fixtures arrive.

They are made for Techlight poles. Other manufacturers use different wall thicknesses and top dimensions, so check fit with us before ordering caps for another brand.

Measure the outside width of the shaft at the very top. On a square pole measure flat side to flat side, and on a round pole measure the outside diameter. Remember that a tapered pole is smaller at the top than at the base.

An open top lets rain run down the inside of the shaft and sit at the base plate, which is where steel poles rust out first. It also gives birds and insects a sheltered place to nest.

Only for a one-piece drop-over base cover, which slides down from the top of the pole, so the fixtures and often the cap come off first. A clamshell or two-piece cover wraps around the base at ground level and leaves the cap alone. Our guide to light pole base covers covers both styles, and the two parts together keep water out at the top and the bottom of the pole.
