Round Pole Base Covers

Base covers and decorative cast bases for 3, 4 and 5 inch round poles, from low collars to column-style skirts.

A round pole base cover hides the anchor bolts, nuts and base plate where a pole meets its pier, keeping the hardware out of sight and out of the weather. There are two kinds. For standard round poles there are 4 inch and 5 inch covers sized 9 x 9 x 4.5 and 11 x 11 x 4.5 inches, in black, bronze, US green or white. For decorative lampposts there are Brandon bases for 3, 4 and 5 inch OD smooth or fluted poles, from a 3 inch tall collar to a 26 inch column, in black, dark bronze or dark green. Slip-over styles must go on before the post top. Pair them with our aluminum decorative light poles.

How Do You Choose a Base Cover for a Round Pole?

Fit comes first, then looks.

  • Measure the pole OD at the base. The standard covers take 4 or 5 inch poles, and the decorative bases come in 3, 4 and 5 inch sizes.
  • Check the base plate. The plate and nuts must fit inside the cover. Measure the plate and compare it to the 9 x 9 inch or 11 x 11 inch footprint.
  • Slip-over or two-piece. Slip-over bases drop down the pole before the head goes on. Two-piece bases, including the SM-SPCVR4R cover, close around a pole that is already standing.
  • Match the material to the pole. Base covers are usually steel, ABS plastic or cast aluminum, and the usual practice is to match the cover to the pole. ABS will not rust and weighs less, which helps in humid climates. Steel covers are typically powder coated to resist corrosion and UV and hold their color. Our guide to light pole base covers goes further.
  • Order adapters where listed. The SB-80 needs an AD5OD adapter, the SB-84 an AD4OD, and the SB-83 and SB-93 an AD3OD, each ordered separately.

Finish the top of the pole too with matching light pole caps.

Round Base Covers Questions

The standard 4 inch round pole cover measures 9 x 9 x 4.5 inches. For decorative poles, the Brandon bases for 4 inch OD run from the 3.5 inch tall SB-24 collar to the 26 inch tall SB-34 column. Check that your base plate fits inside the footprint.

Yes, with a two-piece base. Models like the 2PC3, 2PC4, SB-33, SB-64 and the SM-SPCVR4R close around the pole in halves. Slip-over styles have to go on before the post top or fixture is mounted.

A few do. The SB-80 uses an AD5OD adapter, the SB-84 uses an AD4OD, and the SB-83 and SB-93 use an AD3OD, all ordered separately. The other bases list no adapter.

Yes. The Brandon decorative bases are listed for smooth or fluted round poles in 3, 4 and 5 inch OD. Order the size that matches the pole’s outside diameter.

The base takes abuse the rest of the pole never sees. Rain runs down the shaft to the plate, oil and pet urine collect at ground level, and carts and mowers hit it. A cover shields the plate and anchor bolts from all of that and hides hardware that would otherwise look unfinished. Covers are for anchor-based poles only, since direct burial poles have no exposed base.

A drop-over cover is one piece that slides down the pole from the top, so the fixture, and sometimes the pole cap, has to come off first. A clamshell, or two-piece, cover opens on its hinge or halves, wraps around the base and closes with a threaded lock, so the pole can stay fully assembled.
